Improvement of Cold and Flu Symptoms
Black elderberry extract has been shown to reduce the severity and duration of the flu, and commercial preparations of elderberry for the treatment of colds are available in a variety of forms, including liquids, capsule powders, lozenges, and gummies. A study of 60 people with the flu found that those who took 15 ml of elderberry syrup four times a day showed symptomatic improvement within two to four days, while a control group took seven to eight days to improve symptoms.
Another study of 64 people found that taking 175mg of Elderberry Extract tablets for 2 days after only 24 hours significantly improved flu symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, and nasal congestion. A study of 312 air travelers who took three capsules containing 300 mg of elderberry extract per day found that those who became ill had shorter illnesses and less severe symptoms.
High in Antioxidants
The flowers, fruits, and leaves of the elderberry plant are an excellent source of antioxidants. For example, anthocyanins have been found to have 3.5 times the antioxidant power of vitamin E in the berries. One study comparing 15 different berries and another comparing types of wine found elderberries to be one of the most potent antioxidants. One study found that people's antioxidant status improved after drinking 400ml of elderberry juice for an hour, and another study in rats found that elderberry extract helped reduce inflammation and oxidative tissue damage.
Good for Heart Health
Elderberries may have a positive effect on certain markers of heart and blood vessel health. Studies have shown that elderberry juice can reduce blood fat levels and lower cholesterol, and a diet rich in flavonoids such as anthocyanins has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Immunity Enhancement
Elderberries help keep your immune system healthy. One study found that elderberry extract increased the activity of Lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium that enhances the immune response. This led researchers to believe it may have antiviral and immune-boosting properties. Another study found that concentrated elderberry juice increased the production of cytokines, cell signaling proteins that contribute to the immune response.
Helps Heal Wounds
Elderberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which help tissue healing. In countries like Turkey, the leaves have been used in traditional folk medicine for generations. Recent studies have found that an ointment using a 1% methanolic extract of elderberry leaves showed ‘significant’ wound healing. Topical treatments containing elderberry extract have been found to aid in the synthesis of collagen in the skin and to aid in wound healing in animals. It also inhibits pro-inflammatory activity, preventing wound inflammation and reducing inflammation.
Regulates Blood Sugar
Elderberries and their flowers are used in traditional and folk medicines for blood sugar and diabetes. Some even call it an anti-diabetic plant because of its properties. A study has shown that extracts from the elderly have insulin-like properties that contribute to glucose oxidation, gluconeogenesis, and glucose transport. By removing excess blood sugar from the bloodstream, it can help keep blood sugar levels stable and normal.
Applications:
In the Food Field:
European Union:(EU) 2019/787 Considers that elderberry can be used as an ingredient in spirits. Canada recognizes Elderberry Juice Concentrate, Elderberry Powder, Canadian Elderberry Extract, and Black Elderberry Fruit as usable ingredients in natural health products. In Japan, elderberry juice is listed as a ‘natural color additive’. China GB/T 31121-2014 ‘Fruit and vegetable juices and their beverages’ stipulates that: elderberry is listed as a fruit source of fruit and vegetable juice drinks. Therefore, as an herb with a long history of use in Europe, the fruit of the elderberry is a berry that can be consumed as a juice, excluding immature fruits and other plant parts and is overall a safer raw material.
