    Benefits:

    Helps with Sleep

Valerian extract produces a sedative effect by increasing brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. In sufficient quantities, it produces a sedative effect, calming neural activity. In vitro, findings suggest that valerian extract may cause the release of GABA from nerve endings in the brain, which then prevents GABA from being carried back to the nerve cells. In addition, valerian's valerenic acid inhibits the enzyme that destroys GABA, which is another way valerian may increase GABA levels and promote rest at night.

    Sedative and Tranquilizing

Valerian extract has a calming effect on the central nervous system, settling the nerves in times of agitation and helping to restore the spirit in times of fatigue. Try supplementing with Valerian Extract or Valerian Tea when you have a nervous breakdown, are restless and can't sleep, or have a headache.

    Improvement of Learning Memory

Valerian extract, as well as its main component valerenic acid, enhances the memory capacity of aged mice in the D-galactose-induced aging model, promotes cell proliferation and differentiation into neuronal cells, and reduces serum corticosteroid levels and lipid peroxidation. Blackwater valerian 50% ethanol extract inhibited neuronal inflammatory response in the brain of Alzheimer's rats after gavage.

The mechanism of action may be through attenuating the overexpression of iNOs, inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) reducing the activation of nuclear factor (NF-κB), and inhibiting the overexpression of β-amyloid peptide precursor protein (β-APP) and Aβ1-40-positive cells in neuronal cells. This was achieved by preventing their aggregation in the brain to form senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, and by reducing neuronal cell apoptosis by effectively inhibiting the activation of caspase-3.

    Anticonvulsant

Valerian essential oil has a therapeutic effect on pentylenetetrazole-induced epilepsy in rats. Glutamic acid and aspartic acid decreased significantly in the treated rats, while γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain rebounded to a certain extent, suggesting that it can maintain the balance between excitatory and inhibitory amino acids in the brain, thus suppressing seizures.

    Anxiety Relief

Dr Kamm-Kole found in 1984 that valerian preparation given to elderly men and women with sleep disorders improved their mood, calmed irritable speech and behavior, reduced the time it took to fall asleep, and kept them asleep within 2 weeks. In 1996, Dr Vorbach administered valerian preparations for 1 month to both men and women whose sleep disorders had persisted for 1 month or more. treatment. The results showed that valerian preparations significantly improved the patients' mood. In addition, several other studies have demonstrated that valerian can alleviate fear and anxiety and suppress irritability.

Scientists hypothesize that valerian produces these positive effects through its active ingredient, valerianic acid. Numerous experimental animal studies have shown that valerianic acid promotes the release and increases the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an amino acid important for relieving stress and worry and that when the human brain is deficient in GABA, it can react with anxiety, panic, headaches, and restlessness. Some scientists therefore suspect that valerian ultimately promotes sleep by increasing GABA levels.

    Antidepressant

The aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Valerian shortened the time of forced swimming immobility and the time of tail suspension immobility in mice after gavage, showing antidepressant effects. Gavage of Valerian for 3 weeks can restore normal behavioral activities in chronic stress-depressed rats. The mechanism of action may be to activate the cAMP response pathway by increasing the level of 5-HT, thus phosphorylating the cAMP response element binding protein (p-CREB), regulating the transcription of related genes, and ultimately protecting the hippocampal neurons and exerting the antidepressant effect.

    Applications:

    For Health Products:

In Europe, valerian has been used for over 2,000 years, mainly as a sedative and tonic for the nerves. Europeans regard it as the "god of sleep", and is a famous old remedy for insomnia. European folk commonly used valerian tea to help sleep and prolong life. 1880s, the famous Austrian psychiatrist, psychologist, and psychoanalysis founder Sigmund Freud for the first time with "valerian" treatment of neurological disorders, clinical studies have confirmed that valerian preparations of sedative and sleep-aiding had significant, and no toxic side effects. Clinical studies have confirmed the sedative and hypnotic effects of valerian preparations without toxic side effects. Valerian extract has been used in the treatment of insomnia and in health products to improve sleep quality.

The European Medicines Agency suggests that valerian can be used as an oral and bath additive to relieve tension and aid sleep. Health Canada's Health Product Monograph also states that valerian can help calm and relieve tension and can be used as a sleep aid to promote sleep.
