Anti-Aging
In a study published in August 2023 in the top scientific journal Nature, urolithin A was found to restore the function of haematopoietic stem cells in aging mice (18 months of age and older) to the level of young mice at 8-12 weeks of age. The researchers further elaborated that urolithin A promotes autophagy and regeneration of mitochondria, which enhances the viability of haematopoietic stem cells, making them more "youthful", which in turn improves immunity.
Antioxidant
Compared to other metabolites, urolithin A displays potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties. It fights oxidation through multiple pathways: for example, it can directly scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress; for example, it activates the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway and enhances cellular antioxidant defenses, and then, for example, it inhibits the activity of enzymes involved in the generation of reactive oxygen species and protects cells from oxidative damage.
Weight Loss
Studies have shown that urolithin A prevents diet-induced obesity and metabolic dysfunction without adverse effects. Urocitin A increases triiodothyronine (T3) levels in adipose tissue, promotes body heat production in brown adipose tissue, and induces browning of white adipose tissue, resulting in increased energy expenditure and a reduction in fat cells and fat mass.
Improving the Liver
In a 2020 study, scientists found that urolithin A can improve liver and kidney damage in mice through mechanisms that attenuate oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and apoptosis. In the liver, for example, ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase) levels in the treated group (using three different doses of urolithin), showed a significant recovery compared to the model group (untreated), suggesting that urushiol A improves liver function and liver injury. In the kidney histomorphology it can be observed that the group with the highest dose of urushiol surprisingly tended to improve more than the control group (normal group), which reflects the efficacy of urushiol treatment, in improving kidney injury.
Regulates Intestinal Flora
Urocitin A increases the expression of tight junction proteins, which improves intestinal flora, reduces markers of inflammation, and restores the colon barrier function, relieving colonic inflammation. In addition, dark yellow and black colored urolithin A products often contain organic impurities. High purity urolithin A products are usually pale yellow.
Applications:
For Healthcare Products:
As a natural compound with a wide range of biological activities, urolithin A powder has a promising market application and shows potential in some areas. The anti-aging properties of urolithin A give it potential applications in anti-aging nutraceuticals, helping to slow down the cellular aging process, improving mitochondrial function by stimulating mitochondrial autophagy, helping to remove aged and damaged mitochondria from cells, and promoting the growth of healthy mitochondria. Given its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, urolithin A can be included in supplements that promote cardiovascular health. For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, urolithin A powder can be used as a nutritional supplement to enhance muscle performance and recovery.
