    Benefits:

    Anti-inflammatory

Research has shown that lemon balm extract can be used to treat a variety of conditions associated with inflammation and pain. A 2013 study published in Advances in Pharmacology Science investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of bee balm extract through experimental trauma-induced hindfoot oedema in rats. The anti-inflammatory effect of orally administered bee balm extract showed significant reduction and suppression of oedema (a pure mono extract is not available for oral administration). The results of this and many similar studies suggest that due to its anti-inflammatory effects, bee balm extract can be used internally or externally to reduce swelling and relieve pain.

    Cognitive Improvement

Lemon balm extract has also been shown to improve mental mood and cognitive performance, and it is now believed that these mechanisms are related to muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Lemon balm extract has acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors may be neuroprotective by inhibiting cholinesterase activity in the synaptic gap, reducing acetylcholine catabolism and thereby increasing acetylcholine activity.

The lemon balm extract also showed a protective effect against methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-induced apoptosis in hippocampal primary neuronal cells, possibly due to its free radical scavenging properties and inhibitory effect on monoamine oxidase (MAO), and could be used as a neuroprotectant against central nervous system disorders, demonstrating its potential use in the prevention of neurodegenerative neurological disorders.

    Antidepressant

With antidepressant, hypnotic and sedative properties, lemon balm extract provides a sense of calm and warmth. It promotes emotional balance and is an uplifting compound. A 2013 study conducted at the University of Melbourne found that vanilla extract could help improve anxiety, depression, neuroprotection and cognitive performance.

    Applications:

    For Health Products:

Melissa Offidinalis is included in the European Pharmacopoeia for use as a botanical medicine. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has labeled the effects of bee balm as relieving anxiety, improving sleep, and treating mild gastrointestinal disorders, including bloating and flatulence. The European Society of Phytotherapy (ESCOP) monograph states that bee balm can be used as a symptomatic treatment for nervousness, restlessness and irritability; digestive disorders such as mild cramps; the World Health Organisation (WHO) monograph states that bee balm has antiviral activity, antispasmodic activity, and sedative effects; and the Herbal Science Association of America (HSA) writes that bee balm can relieve mood, increase concentration, and improve cognitive performance. Vanilla extract has been used to improve sleep and other nutraceuticals.

    In the Food Field:

Lemon balm herb is classified as an edible herbal tea ingredient by the Tea and Herbal Tea Association of the European Union and is also classified as a flavoring substance of natural origin by the European Commission under category N2, indicating that Melissa Offidinalis can be incorporated into food products in small doses. In China, according to GB 2760 Appendix Table B.2 (cont'd) Serial No. 376, vanilla can be used in food as a permitted natural flavouring for food. Meanwhile, lemon balm is also listed in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's U.S. Code of Federal Regulations Section 409 as a recognised safe substance for use, with no clear upper limit for use.
