Helpful for Treating Indigestion
Artichoke extract can be used to treat digestive disorders including abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. In a trial involving hundreds of people, it was shown that people with varying degrees of indigestion experienced a reduction in bloating and nausea after taking artichoke extract powder for 4 to 6 weeks. Modern medical research suggests that the mechanism of artichoke extract in treating dyspepsia is that it promotes bile secretion. In a clinical trial, 20 male patients with acute and chronic metabolic disorders were randomized into 2 groups. One group was given artichoke extract and the other group was a control group.
The results showed that bile secretion increased by 127.3% after 30 min and 151.5% after 60 min in the artichoke extract group, which is a significant difference from the control group. This means that artichoke extract can be used as a treatment for digestive disorders associated with inadequate bile secretion and fat malabsorption. No side effects of artichoke extract were observed in the study.
Lipid-Lowering and Anti-Atherosclerosis
Many trials have shown that artichoke extract powder can lower blood lipids, mainly by affecting the synthesis and catabolism of cholesterol and lipids in the liver to regulate lipid levels, thus preventing the development of atherosclerosis. In a double-blind trial, 44 healthy people were randomized to take artichoke extract, and the cholesterol level of one group was significantly lower than that of the control group. The effect was more pronounced in people with high levels of total cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein (HDLS), which is beneficial to health, tended to increase, and the oxidation of harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDLS) was inhibited, thus preventing the development of atherosclerosis.
Liver Protection
Studies on the antioxidant function of artichokes have focused on the leaf extract. The antioxidant capacity of polyphenolic compounds extracted from artichoke was found to be mainly determined by the number of hydroxyl groups in the aromatic ring, and the more hydroxyl groups they contained, the stronger their antioxidant capacity. In addition, the second hydroxyl group in the neighboring and opposite positions could also increase the antioxidant capacity. The results showed that the EC50 values of 1 g of dried artichoke extract for DPPH and FRAP were comparable to those of 29.2 mg and 62.6 mg of VC, and 77.9 mg and 159 mg of VE, respectively, and it had a better antioxidant effect against the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL).
In vitro antioxidant assay in rat hepatocytes showed that the aqueous extract at 0.001 mg/ml could reduce the content of MDA without affecting the level of glutathione (GSH) in the hepatocytes, and on the contrary, it reduced the loss of GSH and the loss of GSSG. The results indicated that the artichoke extract has strong antioxidant effects. Therefore, the antioxidant effect of the extract was inferred to be the main reason for its hepatoprotective and hepatic regenerative effects.
Antimicrobial Activity
The antimicrobial activities of chlorogenic acid, artichoke acid, mignonin-7-rutinoside, and artichoke glycoside in artichoke extract powder were relatively high, and the antifungal activity was stronger than the antibacterial activity.
Applications:
For Health Products:
Artichoke extract is rich in phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, and other chemical components, which have more significant physiological functions, such as antioxidant, liver protection, cholesterol-lowering, antimicrobial, and gastrointestinal improvement.
According to research, the unique "Cynarin" of artichoke is a rare phytonutrient, which is a high-quality natural antioxidant and endothelin, endotoxin antagonist, with the scavenging of free radicals, promoting the regeneration of liver cells, restoration of liver function, and biliary detoxification, as well as dilatation and softening of blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, blood lipids, lowering blood glucose, weight loss and other effects.
In the sixteenth century, there were records of artichokes curing the "Black Death" and "jaundice". German research found that after consuming artichoke for 60 minutes, the secretion of endogenous nitric oxide in liver, blood vessels, and intestines increased significantly by 234%, which can promote and improve the balance of endocrine metabolism and fluid metabolism of the human body, and prevent and control the occurrence and development of a variety of endocrine metabolic diseases, according to which, the artichoke was selected as the "European Star of Medicinal Plants" by the German government in 2003. In 2003, artichoke was selected as the "Star of European Medicinal Plants" in Germany.
